John Archie Stinson, 84, of Dover, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2017 at the Henry County Healthcare Center, Paris, Tennessee. John was born February 7, 1933 in Cumberland City, Tennessee to Johnny Patterson and Viola Jackson Stinson and was a lifelong resident of Stewart County, Tennessee.
John graduated from W.T. Thomas High School in Cumberland City, Tennessee in 1950 where he had a perfect attendance record for 12 years. In 1951, he went to work with the Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC) in the Dover District Office. Beginning his career as a lineman, and one of only three employees, he moved up the ranks at CEMC, becoming district engineer and retiring in 1994 after 43 years of service.
John married Freddie Jean Biggs in July, 1952 and they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary before Freddie passed away in 2002. He later married Wanda Taylor, who passed away in 2016.
From 1952 to 1954, John served in the U. S. Army and was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY.
He was a charter member of the Dover Stewart County Rescue Squad and proudly served in numerous rescue events over the years. A member of Moriah Grove Lodge, he was also a 32nd degree mason of Al Menah Shrine Temple.
John was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he served as a past Chairman of the Board and Elder Emeritus. He was instrumental in the startup of the church’s food bank initiative and was frequently seen helping with its food give-away events.
John is survived by his two sons, Fred Patterson (Pat) Stinson (Debbie), Huntingdon, Tennessee, and Gene Archie Stinson, Atlanta, Georgia; one brother, Gene Franklin Stinson (Soula), Cumberland, Tennessee; one sister, Wilmuth Groves, Clarksville, Tennessee and one granddaughter Alexis Stinson, Huntingdon, Tennessee.
Visitation will be at Anglin Funeral Home on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 3-6:00 pm and on Monday, August 28, 2017 from 10-11:00 am in Dover Tennessee, with a funeral service at Anglin Funeral Home on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 11:00 am. Reverend Scott Jamieson, Pastor of the First Christian Church, Dover, Tennessee will officiate the service. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Dover, Tennessee.
Pallbearers will be Mike Barrow, Ricky Barrow, Dave Rosengrant, Danny Martin, John Davis, Casey Stinson, and Roger Milton. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons and Elders of the First Christian Church, Dover, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the First Christian Church - Food Bank Program.
