Elbert Russell  Thurman
Elbert R. (Bert) Thurman of Dover, TN age 91, passed away on April 26, 2016. He was born July 22, 1924 in Palo Alto, CA, the son of Laurence and Helen Thurman. He had Bachelor of Science Degrees in Marine Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the US Merchant Marine Academy and California Polytechnic College respectively. He served as an officer in the US Navy and Merchant Marine during World War II. After the war he worked for General Electric Co. for 35 years at various locations in northern Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marian Lang Thurman. He is survived by daughter Carol Balance and son-in-law John Balance, daughter Gail Morgan and son-in-law Steve Morgan, and son Timothy Thurman and daughter-in-law Alison Albee. Also surviving are five granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, one sister, six nieces and nephews and his wife of four years, Phyllis Kinkead. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother Laurence Jr.
He enjoyed sailing, woodworking, golfing and camping. He was a Boy Scout Leader, Junior Achievement Advisor, and Science Fair Judge. He was an active member of Lions International.
The family will hold a private memorial service at a future date at Smith Mountain Lake Virginia. The family suggests memorials be given to Sea Scouts of America c/o Mr. Keith Christopher, National Sea Scout Director Boy Scouts of America, (Sum 102) 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving TX 75038. Anglin Funeral Home, Dover, TN is in charge of arrangements.
